What is Cologuard Testing?

Cologuard Testing is a non-invasive colon cancer-screening test based on the latest advances in stool DNA. It is approved by the FDA and is covered by Medicare and by many other health insurances. It is normally used by men and women 50 to 85 years of age who are at an average risk for colon cancer. It is not indicated for those who are at a higher risk for colon cancer, including those with a history of inflammatory bowel disease, a known personal and/or family history of colon cancer or precancerous polyps, or patients diagnosed with an inherited colon cancer syndrome. Blair Gastroenterology Associates specializes in diseases and disorders of the digestive system and would be happy to set up a Cologuard Test for you. Call our office at your earliest convenience.

Preparing and Taking a Cologuard Testing

Cologuard Testing utilizes advanced stool DNA technology to detect the DNA and red blood cells released from precancerous polyps or colorectal cancer. This test is very easy to use and can be done at home. You will receive the Cologuard test kit from the lab after orders from the doctor have been received. The kit will include a prepaid return shipping label and instructions on how to collect the sample. You will send the collected stool sample directly to a specialized laboratory, and you will be notified of the results within two weeks. If the results are positive, a follow-up diagnostic colonoscopy will be ordered.
