What are Hemorrhoids and What Causes Them?

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that cause discomfort and bleeding. Hemorrhoids are very common with more than one million new cases in the US each year. At Blair Gastroenterology Associates, we want you to know that just because they are common it doesn’t mean you need to keep suffering. Hemorrhoids are treatable with an outpatient procedure known as Hemorrhoid Banding.

The Most Common Causes of Hemorrhoids are:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Diet
  • Heavy Lifting
  • Long Periods of Sitting
  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Poor Posture

Effective Treatment Option to Those Suffering with Hemorrhoids

At Blair Gastroenterology Associates, we offer a procedure called the CRH O’Regan System to help treat hemorrhoids. The CRH O’Regan System is “banding,” or placing a rubber band around the base of the symptomatic hemorrhoid and is the most common and effective non-surgical hemorrhoid removal treatment in use today. Over-the-counter remedies only treat symptoms, not the underlying problem. This service and treatment option is performed in our office while providing a discreet and comfortable environment. You will not need to be sedated. We understand that some of our patients are embarrassed to talk about hemorrhoids and hemorrhoid banding, but we don’t want you to be. Our physicians and staff are dedicated to helping you get the care and treatment you need in a caring and private environment. You do not have to suffer in silence anymore.

What Can I Expect During a Hemorrhoid Banding Treatment Visit at Blair Gastroenterology Associates

Hemorrhoid Banding is basically exactly what the name implies. It is placing a rubber band around the base of the symptomatic hemorrhoid. The CRH O’Regan System is much smaller and more comfortable for patients than many previous treatment options. This system uses gentle suction instead of metal toothed forceps to grasp the hemorrhoid, reducing the risk of pain and bleeding. You will not be sedated and the entire procedure takes place in our regular offices in as little as 60 seconds. The device is 100% disposable and is single-use. The banded tissue typically falls off within a few days and 99.8% of patients have no significant post-procedure pain. You may notice a temporary feeling of fullness in the rectum, which should respond adequately to Tylenol or Motrin. This banding technique has been found to be 99.1% effective against hemorrhoids. There are usually three banding sessions required at two week intervals. A final checkup may be scheduled 4-6 weeks after the third banding session.

Preparing for your Hemorrhoid Banding Appointment

You will not need to take any prep medications, or participate in any special preparation instructions. You may drive yourself to and from your appointment. You will not miss any work time. Following the banding, avoid strenuous exercise that evening and resume full activity the next day. A sitz bath is soothing and can be useful for cleansing the area after bowel movements. Be sure to prevent future hemorrhoids from occurring after your CRH O’Regan treatment by avoiding the common causes, such as high fat, low fiber foods and be sure to drink plenty of water. Adding soluble fiber to your diet may help as well. Lastly, avoid straining during a bowel movement.
